Trumpeter 1/35th Swedish "S" Tank
reviewed by Steve Jantscher
The Stridsvagn 103 battle tank, better known as the "S" tank, is unique in being the only armored fighting vehicle with a fixed main armament. The "S" tank uses a specially developed hydrolic system that lays the gun on target by slewing the whole vehicle in azemith and elevation. Almost the perfect type of vehicle for hull down fighting, the "S" tank represents unconvential thinking to a preceived Warsaw attack on a neutral country.
The "S" tank hasn't done well in 1/35th scale. Two resin kits were done, but this is the first injection molded kit of this unique tank. Trumpeter sure has come a long way in such a short time. This kit reminds me more than anything else, of a recent Revelle of Germany self propelled gun kit I purchased last year, the PzH 2000. Very much the same level of detail and small parts. Lots of crisp detail, but with a slightly large "feel" to the parts. The parts show no flash, and average size spru gates. All the extra detail is represented with seperate parts. One can position the dozer blade and hatches to suit. By the way, the bars stowed on each side of the tank represent the floatation screen framing. When rigged, the real vehicle can make 3 to 4 mph in the water. Trumpeter is also offering the improved Strv 103C , which includes the externally mounted fuel cans. The paint scheme also is different, with the 'B being called out in overall green grey (RLM 02), while the more modern 'C calls out for a multicolored paint scheme.
This is a very nice kit.
This kit fills an important gap. It shouldn't require too much work to turn out an excellent replica.
